Environmentalists invite to the national protest in Rila national park
13:56 Mon 18 Aug 2008 - Elitsa Grancharova
The coalitions Citizens for Rila and For the Nature invited all citizens and visitors of Bulgaria to join a so-called citizens’ presence in Rila on August 22 at 12:00 pm at the bottom station of the newly constructed ski lift Pionerska hut-Rilski Ezera hut. “The demonstration will express our disagreement with the continuing construction of an illegal ski lift – part of the illegal ski resort Panichishte-The Lakes-Kabul,” the environmentalists said.
“Once the ministers have been inspected, ensuring they are doing their job correctly and are abiding by the law, and after our demonstration at the bottom ski lift, join us for a hike to the beginning barrier of Rila National Park where we will check to see if cars, despite the ban, are still entering the Park. On our way, we will observe the mass of trees that have been cut down for future ski runs,” environmentalists said in a statement.
Eight new ski resorts are planned for Rila national park and its buffer zone, including Panichishte–The Seven Lakes–Kabul, Super Borovets, Iskrovete, Bodrost–Kartala, Dolna Banya–Ibar, Kostenets–Belmeken, and the expansion of the existing resorts in Semkovo, and Treshtenik, the environmentalists said. “Supposedly unimportant in terms of environmental impact, the construction of ski resorts in Bulgaria has predominantly been done without following Bulgarian environmental legislation and has had a devastating impact on wild nature, biodiversity and the mountain landscape,” the two coalitions claimed.
Despite a year of protests in Rila, construction still continues, with no help from government ministers or state institutions who remain silent on the issue. Although the Minister of Environment and Water Affairs Djevdet Chakurov recently expressed his disapproval of the detailed master plan of the village of Panichishte, which envisages the requisition of 24 decares of land from the territory of Rila national park for the construction of hotels, “This, however, does not mean the construction of the ski resort Panichishte-The Lakes-Kabul and lifts, which will cover 24 decares, has been stopped,” the environmentalists warned.
More than 150 000 Bulgarian and foreign citizens signed a petition insisting the construction be stopped. As a result, the European Union began an infringement procedure against Bulgaria. But according to the environmentalists, still, “the Bulgarian state institutions couldn’t care less”.
