Minister Resignation Sought over Recent Floods
Politics: 14 March 2006, Tuesday.
Right-wingers have called for the Minister of Disasters Management Emel Etem to resign over her institution's inability to counteract the recent floods in the country.
Diehard Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) of former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov blame the minister for failing to repair the infrastructure after last summer's floods and to prevent the current critical situation at many places.
"More than BGN 118 M were allocated to fight the destructive effect of floods six months ago, and just one-day rains inundated the country again," a deputy chairman of the party stated in indignation.
The parliament will ask the prime minister to report on the current crisis and the measures adopted to fight it.
In an indirect response Minister Emel Etem warned some municipalities against possible exaggerating of the situation - "hoping to receive additional funds".
Following a meeting of the national crisis headquarters convened over the last few days' floods, Etem said BGN 100 M are needed to stop about 30 active landslides across the country.
She called for the opening of debates on the responsibility of local authorities when reporting on the manner of funds management.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Union of Democratic Forces Petar Stoyanov declared readiness to ask for the resignation of the whole cabinet, should it fails to manage the consequences of the latest wave of floods.
Houses and industrial premises were flooded in many towns and villages, mainly to the south of Bulgaria. Many landslides have gone active, parts of dam walls burst at places. Train stations and railways were submerged, roads were closed due to the heavy rains and snowfall starting last Saturday.
